SUMMARY:YOUTH LAGOON
DESCRIPTION:TIMBRE CONCERTS PRESENTS \nYOUTH LAGOON \nRARELY DO I DREAM TOUR \n\n  \nDate: Saturday\, April 5th\, 2025 \n\n  \n\nDoors: 6:30PM \nShow Wraps Up: 10PM \n  \n19+ \n  \nOutline: “Life itself is a thunderstorm\,” says Trevor Powers\, the Idaho-based songwriter and producer behind the Youth Lagoon moniker. “Life itself is brothers on walkie-talkies…  it’s your dog at the backdoor\, or a speeding car off in the distance. It’s a gentle voice on the radio. Mom smoking on the porch. The color of sunlight. It’s always right under your nose and so easy to miss. Often\, a simple treasure.” \nIn the fall of 2023\, that treasure came in the form of a shoebox filled with home videos Powers found in his parents’ basement while he was looking for a pre-war harmonica that once belonged to his grandma. “When I took the tapes home and popped in the first one\, it was my brother Bobby and I at the state fair. I was 4 years old choking on a corn dog\,” he laughs. “If anything’s a summary of life\, that is.” Powers spent the following week recording his favorite moments off the TV — Easter egg hunts\, backyard baseball\, bloody noses\, birthday parties\, road trips\, and all the life in-between. “I was like a ghost in a lost memory\,” says Powers. \nThe vivid intimacies of life and boyhood depicted in Powers’ home movies not only began shaping his songs\, but infusing with them. He started sampling the audio and manipulating it into a kind of musical cinematography\, fusing past with future. “What I was really consumed with was how much I could zoom in on my actual history\,” says Powers. “I wanted to really make someone feel like they were inside my living room in 1993\, but rearrange the furniture a bit. Something about combining that level of hyperreality with fairytales of devils and detectives weirdly felt like the truest way to immortalize these pieces of my family.” \nRooted in love and childhood memoir\, Rarely Do I Dream is a triumph of American gothic imagination — where storybook innocence dissolves into a radioactive billow of teenage drifters\, drug-addled hustlers\, and old-world folklore. Drifting between propulsive electronica and hallucinatory rock songs\, Powers’ singular voice always glows front and center as the neon road sign pointing home. \n“The more I rewind the tapes of my life\, the more I can hear the voice of my soul\,” Powers says. “This isn’t nostalgia. Life’s much more messy than that. It’s a dedication to all the parts of who I was\, who I am\, and who I’m going to be.” \nWith a bent toward rural noir\, Powers has found a home in a world where his personal journals and poetic confessions are indistinguishable from the twisted mythologies of habitual sinners and devout barflies. “The summer taught me that life’s a baseball bat to the jaw\,” Powers sings on “Gumshoe (Dracula From Arkansas)” — painted with western tremolo guitars\, proto-ambient recordings of dogs barking\, family talking\, and a distorted drumbeat circling it all. On “Neighborhood Scene\,” the album’s opening track and one Powers describes as “a postcard to everyone I’ve ever loved\,” he turns a remote Idaho cul-de-sac into a land both eternal and sacred\, inverting the privacy of home into an open invitation to sit down for dinner. “Do I\, do I belong in a country house? Every angel and devil out marchin’ on the lawn. / Do I\, do I tell Tom that I saw his dad at the ‘No Romance’ bunny ranch? Cowgirl ain’t his mom\,” he sings. \n“Speed Freak\,” a dark joyride that showcases Youth Lagoon’s glaring metamorphosis\, unleashes a grungy beat while synth bass struts and splinters into a technicolor post-punk spectacle. “This song came from a thought I had of giving the angel of death a hug\,” Powers says. “We spend our whole lives running from this thing we can’t outrun. The more I’ve learned to die to myself\, the more I’ve learned there is no death. Only transformation. A door opens when you learn to let go of the identity you’ve been building your whole life. Someone told me a couple years ago\, ‘I have good news for you and I have bad news. The bad news is Trevor is doomed. There’s no hope for Trevor. The good news is — you’re not Trevor.’ When I heard that\, it clicked.” \nAfter taking an eight-year hiatus away from Youth Lagoon\, Powers returned to the alias with the acclaimed Heaven Is a Junkyard in early 2023\, an album of warped Americana that brought his focus back home. Youth Lagoon’s first album in nearly a decade pushed the project into a neo-western realm both deeply literary and musically vast\, centered around an upright piano and static-coated electronics. “I had ended Youth Lagoon years ago because I lost who I was\,” Powers says. “Then life jumped me in an alley and gave me a beating. That suffering changed my frequency. Now my ideas are a river. I can’t keep up.” \nDelicate yet aggressive\, innovative yet classic\, Rarely Do I Dream is Youth Lagoon’s most comprehensive and audacious album to date. A treasure trove of home movies\, twangy fuzz guitars\, sun-bleached synths\, classical pianos\, blown-out drums\, and Powers’ spellbinding melodies all feel like an old photograph that’s been reanimated in a strange and distant future. “This was the first time I’ve ever used guitar instead of piano as my main writing tool\,” says Powers. “Anytime I’m horrified and on a knife-edge creatively I know I’m doing something right. I need that feeling of knowing I could either be making the greatest thing I’ve ever made or something so bad it could be career suicide. Anything short of that\, I’ve failed myself. After the Heaven Is a Junkyard tour\, I was fully in the moment and appreciated all of it… then I said to myself\, ‘Ok\, moving on.’ I have zero interest in repeating myself.” \nPowers’ ability to relentlessly push and evolve the project forward has taken Youth Lagoon into a territory both fiercely original and strikingly expansive. Recorded with co-producer and mixer/engineer Rodaidh McDonald\, Rarely Do I Dream marks a seismic transformation\, a mammoth leap forward\, and an instant\, indelible landmark in Youth Lagoon’s revered discography. With a profound love and dedication to family\, along with his own brand of genre-bending noir rock\, Powers’ has achieved what he set out to do. \n“I wanted to make an album that feels like life itself…” says Powers. \n\n\nEntry Requirements: All patrons must be 19 years of age or older with two pieces of valid ID (one of which must be government issued with a photograph). We do not allow gang or fight related apparel. We are members of the BarWatch program\, so entry may be denied due to previous incidents at our or other participating venues.

SUMMARY:NO THANKS
DESCRIPTION:UPSTAIRS ENTERTAINMENT PRESENTS \nNO THANKS \nFEATURING KIMBZ \n\n  \nDate: Friday\, January 17th\, 2025 \n\n  \n\nDoors: 10PM \nClose: 2AM \n  \n19+ \n  \nOutline: No Thanks is a Canadian duo we are very excited to have in the booth in 2025. They will be joining our resident DJ Kimbz for an all time vibe in a boiler room setting. \nNo Thanks is a high-energy house duo that produces their sound from the Canadian West Coast at full tilt. Giuliano Rascan and Dejan Zoric’s collaboration merges the gap between tech\, bass\, and pop genres to curate house that is undeniably rooted in West Coast influence. While the standard house rules apply\, No Thanks lures their listeners into an auditory playground that is vocal driven and stylized with high pitch\, tight drums\, and low bass lines. Their approach to music is instrumentally nuanced\, but their philosophy is simple: there’s something for everyone. This duo’s international reach has generated a global call for West Coast house\, and No Thanks is responding.

SUMMARY:BIANCA OBLIVION
DESCRIPTION:DUBVERSIFIED CULTURE & CMCT PRESENT \nBIANCA OBLIVION \nFEATURING J2\, MIRAGE & MARAH \n\n  \nDate: Friday\, November 8th\, 2024 \n\n  \n\nDoors: 9PM \n  \n19+ \n  \nOutline: \nWe gather in Metulia (“Victoria\, B.C.”) on unceded and never-surrendered Lək̓ʷəŋən homelands. This acknowledgement is a reminder to act with love\, respect\, gratitude and accountability towards the land\, water and people. \nArtist Bio: \nBianca Oblivion lives and breathes Los Angeles. Born and raised in the City of Angels\, the globe-trotting\, genre-hopping\, hard-hustling artist-who was recently named by Mixmag as one of 2023’s breakthrough DJs of the year and is also part of Beatport Next’s class of of 2024-is unbound by dance music orthodoxy\, opting instead for an “anything goes as long as it bangs” approach that reflects the unique cultural palette of her hometown. Growing up Mexican in LA\, Bianca heard G-funk blasting out of cars and cumbia coming out of the stereo at backyard BBQs\, and during her teen years\, she started spending her nights soaking up electro\, house and all sorts of heavy bass music\, most often in the city’s vibrant underground club and warehouse rave scene. \nShe’s still raving today\, and as a DJ\, she’s intent on connecting the dots between seemingly disparate sounds\, as likely to drop dancehall\, reggaeton\, hip-hop\, R&B or even a cheeky pop edit as she is to unleash a torrent of gut-rumbling grime\, dubstep\, hardcore or some other bass-heavy sound. Bianca is the rare selector who can tear the roof off just about anywhere\, and in the past few years\, she’s showcased her skills not only at world-renowned festivals like Bass Coast\, Glastonbury\, Fusion and Boomtown\, but also at iconic clubs like London’s fabric and Barcelona’s Razzmatazz. Still\, it’s Warp Mode-the LA party she throws alongside fellow bass fiends Star Eyes and AK Sports-where she’s most comfortable\, and not just behind the decks. Aside from providing a consistent platform for femme/non-binary\, queer and POC artists\, Warp Mode has become a beacon for low-end freakers from Southern California and beyond\, which is why its unique brand of neon-streaked mayhem was broadcast to the world via an unforgettable Boiler Room takeover in 2023. \nSound: \nUpstairs boasts an in-house PK sound system\, delivering crisp\, immersive audio that transforms every beat into a powerful\, visceral experience. \nArtist Lineup: \n9:00pm – 10:15pm: J2 \n10:15PM – 11:30PM: Mirage \n11:30PM – 12:30 AM: Marah \n12:30PM – 2AM: Bianca Oblivion \nEntry Requirements: All patrons must be 19 years of age or older with two pieces of valid ID (one of which must be government issued with a photograph). With the holiday Monday following right behind\, this is your chance to finish the long weekend in style! Whether you’re a seasoned raver or new to the scene\, this is one event you won’t want to miss — a celebration of underground music culture that will leave you buzzing long after the final track. \nTonight\, we’re not just celebrating UKG\, 140\, and drum and bass; we’re also marking Dubversified Culture’s 7th Anniversary! Join us as we toast to seven years of groundbreaking events\, unforgettable performances\, and a vibrant community that continues to push the boundaries of the electronic music scene here in Victoria. \nHere’s to seven years of Dubversified Culture and many more to come! \nArtist Lineup: \n9:00pm – 10:00pm: Lucy Ford \nLucy Ford is a fantastic DJ\, a founding member of the Footwork Team\, and currently our amazing volunteer coordinator. \nLucy Ford has been mixing beats since 2004. She became an avid vinyl collector while in medical school in Ontario and got her start as a DJ in the Toronto scene. Lucy has held residencies with the Toronto-based Nocturnal Commissions and Embedded Entertainment and most recently is one of the founding members of Victoria’s Footwork Entertainment. Since moving west\, she hosted Percussive Tendencies on the University of Victoria campus radio station CFUV 101.9FM and played at various Future Soul events including the finale in 2019. When Lucy isn’t spinning and mixing together various breakbeat-based genres\, she enjoys twirling around in her hula hoop and enjoying nature on Vancouver Island with her two daughters. \n10:00pm – 11:00pm: Dyce \nFrom deep shuddering basslines to rolling 808s and high energy breaks\, DYCE delivers a memorable sonic experience. His live performances span a vast musical landscape\, from Garage\, Breaks\, and Jungle to Chicago Footwork. DYCE delivers handpicked gems from a multitude of underground music outlets and influences. Generating waves in the Island scene\, his sets are characterized by precision blends\, intricate selection\, and an energetic stage presence. \n11:00pm – 12:00am: Two Swords \nHaving signed to Critical Music under his ‘Hyroglifics’ moniker at 22\, Matt Harris very quickly rose to the top of the D&B scene after the success of his debut EP. He would go on to release 10 EP’s and 1 full length LP with the label\, also releasing tracks on prominent + tastemaker UK labels such as Alix Perez’s 1985\, Ivy Lab’s 20/20 imprint\, Friction’s Shogun Audio and Sherelle’s Hooversound label. \nHis skill as a DJ secured him yearly slots at leading UK + Europe festivals such as Boomtown and Outlook. \nHe was hand selected in 2016 to be part of Red Bull Music Academy in Montreal for two weeks where he would further showcase his talent\, working with artists from across the globe on several different projects\, and being mentored by Just Blaze\, Deradoorian\, Dorian Concept and Thundercat. This is also where the collaborative project ‘Rippps’ was birthed with the dutch keyboardist Niels Broos\, releasing several tracks on LA based label ‘Alpha Pup’. \nHaving toured extensively around the US since 2018\, Matt has made his mark on the electronic music scene\, amassing a solid and dedicated fan base. In late 2022 he saw the opportunity to develop his production craft further and moved out to LA from Bristol where he was currently residing. This gave him the ability to work on regular sessions producing for different artists as well as allowing him the opportunity to regularly play 3-4 shows a month in various states across the US. He has played the Main stage at festivals such as The Untz\, Infrasound\, Treefort\, Wicked Woods and Lucidity. \nMatt Harris’ latest offering ‘Two Swords’ is a project that fully encapsulates his current sound and direction\, propelling him into 2024 and beyond. As Matt’s production style evolved further following on from the release of his debut album ‘I’ll Wait\, I Guess’\, a sonically varied LP full of features from prominent UK artists such as Feux\, Black\, Josh\, Nah Eeto\, Deft\, and Lyza Jane. He felt the need to evolve and with that brought a slight rebrand to his own work. \nOver the past decade\, Matt has proven his place and further continues to develop his musical voice with each passing year\, an inimitable artist and producer with an undeniably promising future ahead. \n12:00am – 1:00am: Monty \nWith releases on key labels such as Critical Music\, Invisible and Flexout Audio\, Monty represents 1985 Music ‐ the cutting‐edge label curated and nurtured by Alix Perez. His first release ‘Hold Me Back EP’ in 2017 led the way to a long and fruitful relationship with the imprint. After a string of genre‐bending output\, he released his debut album ‘Hit The Lights’ in 2021. A landmark release for the Toulouse‐based producer and DJ\, this long‐form listen is a celebration of tempo diversity and underground bass. \n“A purveyor of the Toulouse sound\, 1985 phenom\, and supreme talent. Monty Brimley has quickly established himself to become all of the above – and this couldn’t be more evident than on his debut album\, Hit the Lights.” UKF December 2021. \nSimilar to his production style\, Monty’s DJ sets are famously diverse\, progressive\, and high energy. Flowing through sub‐genres smoothly and harmonically while taking the audience on a sonic journey through wonky halftime beats and rollers with the consistent theme of fun. Highlight performances include sets at Let It Roll\, Outlook Festival\, and Canada’s Shambhala Festival. As a pivotal artist in the underground dance scene\, most weekends see Monty touring around Europe’s best clubs ‐ with previous tours completed or penciled around Australia\, New Zealand\, North America\, and beyond. \n1:00am – 2:00am: Mirage \nMirage’s musical journey mirrors the illusory nature of sound\, bending and refracting across genres\, creating an experience that captivates and transcends expectations in the realm of music production. Originally hailing from Québec\, Mirage (formerly known as ‘Blackout’) began delving into the fusion of breaks and hip-hop on the analog grooves of vinyl in 2010. In his latest exploration\, Mirage immerses himself in the depths of 140\, Deep D&B & Jungle\, consistently pushing the boundaries. \nBeyond the studio\, Mirage is a community-builder in Victoria\, B.C.’s music scene. The architect behind Dubversified Culture\, he founded this underground community in 2017 with a mission to elevate local West Coast bass artists and forge connections across global Bass music and the local dance music scenes. Host of a monthly show on Subtle Radio (UK)\, Mirage’s dedication underscores his commitment to navigating the ever-evolving landscape of electronic music. \nEntry Requirements: All patrons must be 19 years of age or older with two pieces of valid ID (one of which must be government issued with a photograph). We do not allow gang or fight related apparel. We are members of the BarWatch program\, so entry may be denied due to previous incidents at our or other participating venues.

SUMMARY:HELADO NEGRO
DESCRIPTION:TIMBRE CONCERTS & UPSTAIRS ENTERTAINMENT PRESENT \nHELADO NEGRO \n\n  \nDate: Thursday\, August 29th\, 2024 \n\n  \n\nDoors: 8PM \nShow: 9PM \nShow Wraps Up: 12AM \n  \n19+ \n  \nOutline: Born in South Florida in 1980 to Ecuadorian immigrant parents\, the world-building multi-instrumentalist Roberto Carlos Lange stitches together memories\, impressions\, and atmospheres to make detailed dreamscapes as Helado Negro. He produces\, engineers\, and mixes his own songs\, literally creating and populating his own sonic world. Lange has a degree in Computer Art and Animation from Savannah College of Art and Design and works extensively with video\, sculpture\, sound\, and performance. He brings that toolbox to whatever he makes\, and there’s a seeming effortlessness to the complexity. His songs are awash with vibrant melodies\, sharp lyrical vignettes\, and subtle\, even whispered hooks. Since his 2009 debut\, Awe Owe\, across multiple projects and collaborations\, through his breakthrough records\, 2016’s Private Energy and 2019’s This Is How You Smile\, and to 2021’s Far In\, Lange’s work continues to move past easy genre assignments. Showcasing that interest in open-ended multidisciplinarity\, in 2022\, he and his wife\, the artist Kristi Sword\, created the multidisciplinary exhibition\, Kite Symphony\, with Ballroom Marfa — it was a collection of impressionistic installations\, drawings and sound pieces that encourages listeners to “open their ears to the sky\, the sound of cacti\, and the feeling of the wind on their skin.” Lange’s ninth studio record\, Phasor\, picks up on that interest in the natural world but in the form of pop music. Deep\, atmospheric\, and meticulously executed\, it’s Lange’s tightest collection to date. Lange has been awarded a United States Artist fellowship and a Foundation for Contemporary Arts grant. He lives in Asheville\, NC.
